colored girls.jpeg 2007 colored girls.jpeg- 채색된 여자들 외모에 의한 판단과 인증은 우리 사회에 공공연한 현상이다. 인터넷의 사이버 언론에서는 재빠른 판단이 요구되어지고 이미지가 단시간에 소비된다. 인터넷에서는 텍스트보다는 이미지가 선호되고 이미지는 한 순간에 호불호를 진단받는다. 네티즌은 간단히 댓글을 달음으로서 진단을 한다. 이미지 하나를 두고 댓글로 갑론을박이 벌어지는 현상이 비일비재하다. 특히 네티즌들의 관심을 끄는 것은 여성의 몸이다. (요즈음 남성의 몸 이미지에도 관심을 가지기 시작했지만 아직 여성의 몸에 대한 관심에는 못 미친다.) 그것이 그녀의 셀프카메라든, 화보이던 간에 사진속의 그녀는 아름다운지, 아름다움은 진짜인지에 대한 토론이 벌어지는 것이다. 사진 한 장에 네티즌은 폭발적인 반응을 보인다. 그러한 댓글판은 페미니즘 아티스트 바바라 크루거가 말했듯 전쟁터(battleground)를 연상시킨다. 아직도 여성의 몸은 격렬한 논쟁거리라는 반증이다. 주목할 만 한 점은 그런 흔하디흔한 이상적으로 여겨지는 여성의 몸 이미지가 현실과는 거리가 멀다는 데에 있다. 현실에서는 철저한 금욕과 자기관리로 만들 수 있는 마르고 부분적으로 풍만한 몸매와 따라 하기도 힘든 기묘한 포즈가 많이 보인다. 그것들은 분명 환타지에 가까운 이미지인데도 언론을 통한 잦은 노출로 인해 우리는 익숙함을 느낀다. 현실보다는 가상세계(인터넷)에 점점 더 많은 시간을 할애하게 됨에 따라서 매스미디어에서 얻은 관습화된 이미지들은 사람들의 뇌리에 깊숙이 자리 잡고 있다. 그러한 정보들은 진위여부를 판단할 여력이 없이 이미 진실에 가깝게 인식되어져 있다. 나는 인터넷에 유통되는 “섹시 화보”를 그린다. 인터넷 화보에는 대중에게 소비되기 위한 욕망이 있고 나름의 미감이 있다. 섹시하게 연출된 여인이 잘 꾸며진 실내나 자연을 배경삼아 포즈를 취한다. 그녀들은 소비되기 위해 역할놀이(role play)를 하고 있다. 이는 섹시한 요부를 원하는 남성들의 대리충족을 위한 결과물일 것이다. 무비판적으로 화려하게 포장된 육체의 이미지들이 화보라는 이름으로 유통된다. 사실상 그녀들의 포즈는 자극적이지만 본질적으로 파격적이지는 않다. 가부장적 사회에 순응하고 그 아래에서 작은 즐거움을 제공할 뿐이다. 나는 그렇게 하릴없이 반복적으로 재현되고 소비되는 몸 이미지들을 캔버스에 옮긴다. 제목인 ‘colored'는 ‘착색되었다'라는 뜻이다. 다양한 색으로 표현된 각각의 화면의 내용은 별반 다르지 않다. 과장되고 정형화된 육체의 이미지는 착색된 실체이므로 화면 속 그녀들은 아무리 생경한 색으로 덧칠한들 그 자신만의 진정한 개성을 가질 수 없다. 그러한 여성의 몸에 대한 환상과 좌절 그리고 몸을 보는 시선에 대해 주목한다. 대중매체를 통해 익숙하게 접하는 여성의 이미지들, 특히 스포츠 연예 신문에서 자주 볼 수 있는 이미지들을 제시함으로서(포르노가 아니다. 초등학생도 손쉽게 접근할 수 있는 포털 게시판에 올려지는 ‘공개된' 이미지이다.) 무의식적으로 접하기 쉬운 저급한 이미지를 갤러리라는 의식적인 공간에서 거리를 두고 감상한다는 아이러니한 의미도 부여할 수 있다. 나는 끊임없이 변화하는 웹의 JPEG 이미지파일을-그저 스쳐지나가는, 비판의식 없이 소비되는- 캔버스라는 매체를 통해 박제시킨다. 풍선껌처럼 씹히고 버려질 이미지를 억지로 잡아두고 보여준다고 우리의 인식이 바뀌지는 않겠지만, 그 정지된 화면-캔버스-을 통해 잠시나마 의문을 가져볼 수는 있는 기회는 될 수 있다. 대체 이런 여자들이 어디에 살고 있는지... To judge people by the way they look is quite common in our society. We are requested to judge promptly, and consume lots of images on the Internet. Such images are more favored than texts on the Internet, and our likes and dislikes for them are decided momently. Netizens evaluate them by posting their mentions on the Internet. They frequently debate the pros and cons on some images. In particular, one of the most eye-catching among netizens is the female body. (Recently, some shows a particular concern with the male body, but it is far less than the female body.) They discuss if some woman in a picture is beautiful or not, if her beauty is authentic or not. Their response to the picture appears explosive. As feminist artist Babara Kruger commented, the Internet space for netizens' comments recalls a battlefield. The female body still remains as the subject of heated debates. What's noticeable is that an ideal women's body is far from a real one. An entirely thin, yet partly ample body is often regarded as ideal. That is surely close to a fantastic image, but we feel familiar to it due to frequent contacts through the mass media. People usually spend more time in a virtual world than this real world. The conventional images obtained from the mass media are deeply impressed on our mind. They are thought of as closer to the genuine. I draw sexy girls that are consumed through the Internet. This sexy girl album has its own desire and aesthetic sense. Some sexy women pose against exquisitely decorated indoor space or natural scenes. They do roleplay to be consumed. They are substitutes for the male's desire for the temptress. Their luxuriously decorated body images are posed on the Internet in the name of a pictorial album. Their poses appear highly charged but not funky essentially. They adapt themselves to a male-dominating, patriarchal system, offering mere pleasure. The body images I move to my canvas are represented and consumed repeatedly. The title ‘colored' means ‘tinged'. All canvases expressed with a variety of colors are not so different in their contents. Although colored with clumsy tones, my exaggerated typical images have no their own individuality. I pay attention to fantasies for and gazes at the female body. I present the female images that are often found in the mass media, especially in yellow journals like Korea's sports tabloids. By presenting them through the canvas, I bring about the irony that we appreciate vulgar images in a formal, high-grade gallery space. I hope we are able to have an opportunity to look those images from different angles and reconsider their inner side through the medium of canvas.
